19th century buildings and structures in Singapore are typically low-rise with shallow foundations. The remodeling and retrofitting of the old Parliament House unveiled large pockets of archaeological deposits beneath its flooring and grounds. Several excavations were conducted over the years, particularly prior to the site’s conversion into The Arts House in 2002 when the construction crew accidentally discovered a cache of medieval Chinese stoneware bottles.
